This walk provides great views to the edge of Cannock Chase!
2 miles - 60 mins
Turn left out of of Canalside Farm gate, under railway bridge and turn immediately right, along the bridleway to the Clifford Arms in the centre of Great Haywood village. On joining the road, head right and go 200 yards to Anson school. Turn right down the track between school and church.
At start of woodlands turn left and head up through woods adjacent to the church grounds. Go through the stile at the top into an open field. Follow track across the field towards the wooded copse that juts out from the right side into field. Pass this copse into the next field and head right to a stile leading into wooded area. A short detour to the left is a great viewpoint over to Cannock Chase!
Follow the path that drops and runs alongside a fence above the railway cutting. When the path emerges, go over a stile and back into the bottom of the field you first crossed. Stay close to fence until meeting a further stile to cross back into original woodland. This time head left to rejoin main track and go under railway bridge.
Cross bridge over canal (originally one of the main entrances to Shugborough Park), then turn right to join the canal towpath (beside Trent and Mersey Canal). Continue on towpath for 100 yards under pedestrian bridge, past lock, then 200 yards on to Junction Bridge (over Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal). Cross bridge and after 20 yards turn left to go up and rejoin the road (Mill Lane) back to our Farm gate.
